BACK TO INACCESSIBLE ISLAND 10.23.12

We pass some islands poking out of the frozen sea while en route - once again to Inaccessible Island for the day.

The boss riding along in style.

Below | At the red flags you can see a "bridge" installed (some wood slabs) to help us drive over this obvious ice crack safely. There are a few of these along the way and they've been extremely helpful this year; they save us a tremendous amount of time and effort. If they were not in place we'd need to stop the vehicle, shovel through the snow, manually drill through the ice to hit the sea water in order to measure the ice depth and to determine if there is an acceptable distance to cross the crack with the vehicle on the way there AND back at EACH crack - and there are several. It's a good amount of work and can cut into travel time dramatically

Jiffy drilled ice hole after a few days...

New hole!

Beautiful dense Sea Ice:

Fishin' Fishin'

I catch one...

One 'T. Bernie' as we fondly call this type of fish:

InaccessibleIsland from another angle in all her glory:

Seal spotting! A Weddell - who has spotted us in return.

Below | This is the hole the seal came up through - which is pretty amazing - just large enough to haul itself out and onto the snow.

You can see the bit of blood where the seal must have scraped itself on the ice on it's way up:

CUTE!

The above images are pretty zoomed in - but in reality we stay far way from the animal so as to not disturb or disrupt:

We have fish to get home

And we are on our way back to McMurdo Station.
