10.16.12

These pictures are somewhat miscellaneous.

Just another ice hole in a hut - but the color is so wonderful, I wish I could do it justice:

A stove in a hut to keep us and divers warm - or warmer than we'd be otherwise certainly:

The next photos are all just from what I could see out of the lounge window in our dorm building.

Two chairs on the porch:

Night workers on the main road from McMurdo down to the sea ice:

Ice and layers of snow floating on the Ross Sea:

Hut Point built in the early 1900's by Robert Falcon Scott overlooking the frozen sea. It's hard to see but there is a rather substantial 'hut' below the cross above. See this article for a brief description: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hut_Point

Zoomed out a little, you can see Hut Point surrounded by sea ice and snow. Sometime in the early part of the year all of this ice "blows out" and shoots off into the sea as it breaks up and melts leaving this little peninsula reaching out into the sea.

Some people walking up to see a statue of Virgin Mary in a cage like structure installed some time ago:

More beautiful evening sun photos as it shines over the frozen Antarctic ocean:

  1. I love those skies. Your ice hole looks ever so much like a sinkhole on a Caribbean island.
